The countdown to Christmas is set to begin tonight and it will be marked with a range of performances each night in Folkestone.

The Folkestone Living Advent Calendar is returning after its success last year.

Each night at 6pm, somewhere in the town, a door will open with a performance of music, drama, opera, puppetry or storytelling greeting the audience.

Youngsters will also be able to get their hands on treats and there will be collections for a various charities.

The event is being hosted by JimJam Arts.

Sadie Hurley, who began the project with Sue Blakesley, said: “Each time a door opens we want to give the audience a lovely surprise in true advent calendar style.”

The fun kicks off at the Bayle today, and on Friday people will be able to watch a performance outside the restaurant Blooms @ 3/4 at the bottom of the Old High Street.

Other venues in Folkestone include the historic Leas Pavilion and St Eanswythe's Primary School in Church Street.

Funding for the event came from the Arts Council, the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Shepway District Council, Folkestone Town Council, The Quarterhouse as well as an online crowd funding appeal.
