As Britain marks the centenary of the start of the First World War today it has been revealed heartless thieves stole medals awarded to a Second World War pilot.

Four medals were taken from a home in Broomfield Road, Folkestone, where the war hero's son lives.

Although a 26-year-old Folkestone man has been arrested on suspicion of theft and has been placed on bail until Monday, October 13 pending further enquiries, police have not found the missing medals and are appealing to the public for help.

PC Geraint Morgan said: "These medals, one of which is an Atlantic Star, were awarded to the victim’s father for his services to his country.

"He served with the RAF and flew in Lancaster bombers and sadly paid the ultimate price in defending his country.

"His medals have been looked after by his son ever since and to have them go missing has caused a great deal of upset due to their sentimental value.

"I would urge anyone with information about the theft, in particular anyone with information about the location of the medals, to get in touch."

Cash, bank cards and a sapphire ring with about five stones were also taken during the theft, which happened between July 5 and and 16.
