The family of a teenager who died in a moped crash have paid tribute to a "fun and loving boy".

Daniel Quigley, 17, from Folkestone, is understood to have gone to Pent Valley Technology College and then East Kent College for further education.

The collision happened just before 7am yesterday on the New Dover Road, next to the junction with Winehouse Lane in Capel-le-Ferne when his bike crashed with a stationary van.

In a statement the Quigley family said: "He had just started his apprenticeship in carpentry and was looking forward to life.

"Daniel was always helping out his granddad at Folkestone Invicta football ground.

"Daniel was loved very much by his family and friends."

Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the crash and have asked for anyone who saw the events leading up to and the crash itself to come forward.

Young Daniel was a supporter and volunteer at Folkestone Invicta Football Club.

He was a well-known member of the club and went up to the Fullicks Stadium regularly with his grandfather Herbie Tyler "who are both known to so many of us connected with Folkestone Invicta Football Club", the club said today.

A statement from the club said: "It is with deep regret that we have to announce that one of our young supporters, Daniel Quigley was killed in a tragic accident.

"He had often helped his granddad who many know as one of our regular 50/50 Draw or Golden Goals ticket sellers at home matches.

"The board has asked us to pass on their sincere condolences to Daniel’s family and friends, and we are sure that all fellow supporters would like to echo those thoughts."

The teenager went into the stationary silver Peugeot flatbed van and now the driver, a 34-year-old from Ashford, has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail.

Several roads in the village were closed for much of the day while police officers gathered information.

Floral tributes have since been left at the scene.

East Kent College’s Folkestone Campus principal, Paul Manning, said: “Daniel was a well-liked, sociable member of our college community.

"He joined the East Kent College Folkestone campus studying a Multi-Trades progression, which finished this summer.

"He was about to progress into a Site Carpentry Apprenticeship with the College, and I have no doubt he would have been extremely successful at that.

"His tragic death has come as a shock to us all, and we will continue to feel his loss for some time" - Principal Paul Manning

A label attached to one of the flowers said: "Daniel, you were taken too soon.

"So sorry, forever in my prayers and thoughts."

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Scott Lynch from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “We are following up a number of lines of enquiry including viewing CCTV in the area.

“There are a number of drivers who may have witnessed this collision but did not have the opportunity to stop and leave their details.

"I would urge them to contact us as soon as possible.”

Spokesman for the ambulance service, Rich Airey said: "We sent two ambulances and two ambulance cars.

"The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene."

No one else was injured.
