Businesswoman and author publishes book designed to empower women

A Seabrook businesswoman and author hopes to empower women on a global level following the release of her first book.
Sarah-Anne Lucas, 46, of Alexandra Corniche, is revelling in the success of her hybrid-published guide; It’s Never About the Fitness.
The title, she said, came to her about seven years ago when she was amid a nursing career in east Kent.
Ms Lucas, a mother-of-three, has trained physically all her life, including when she was younger during sporting competitions.
The Plymouth-born woman, who is known among her friends and fans as Bird, has been promoting the book and speaking to groups of people about their lifestyles.
Her guide, which is predominantly aimed at women, is a subtle way to get people, especially those with busy lives, to “be at their best” everyday.
Ms Lucas said: “It is never about the fitness, it is about supporting people - I look at their support network and how I can support them.
“I think it is really interesting to see that women still want to look amazing and men want to be deemed as strong.
“I look at women empowerment, health and fitness, and it is a drop in, drop out, it is quick and actionable.”
The slogan on the front of it details 11 daily rituals to create a “love-affair” with your body - which Ms Lucas says is a way to get people to love and accept their appearance.
The book, which is part of the Bird on a Bike business, set up solely by Ms Lucas, was a result from things going on in her own life.
In her book, she said: “I had the most wonderful career in nursing, respected, valued and loved by my colleagues in a GP’s surgery.
“At home, though, it was the complete opposite.
“My eldest son Jack had been newly diagnosed with ADHD, autism and Tourettes, my second marriage was challenging - the love was there but the bricks in the wall were slowly falling out.”
She said it was the loss of her independence that resulted in a “had enough moment” which she uses in the book to highlight to her readers that at some point, people do reach this stage.
At various points, the guide tells the reader to carry out a set of actions, whether they be stretches, or thought processes.
She said: “I teach people to move and I teach them to be at their personal best.”
When asked where she’d like her business and her book to be in five years, she said that a New York best-seller and a global reach was on her agenda.
The book can be bought personally from Ms Lucas and it is available to order from Amazon in paper or Kindle format.
Ms Lucas is also recording an audio version of the book, due to be released before Christmas.
