Villagers set MP Damian Collins “on fire” alongside Donald Trump at a bonfire night in protest over the planned £250 million lorry park near their homes.

The Folkestone and Hythe MP has been frequently criticised by residents in Stanford over recent months amid claims he has failed to represent their concerns.

It prompted the village pub’s landlord to make a “guy” of Mr Collins for the bonfire at a fireworks display last weekend.

Suzi Bushell, who runs The Drum Inn with her husband Mick, said: “At first this was a bit of fun. I feel we were sold out by him but I never thought a small thing would make a such a big impact.”

The village near Hythe is set to bear the brunt of the 250-acre lorry park off junction 11 of the M20 proposed by the government last year to deal with the problems of Operation Stack.

People watched the bonfire with sparklers before a fireworks display on Friday evening accompanied by a hog roast, barbecue, raffle and music.

Mrs Bushell added she felt the £250m earmarked by George Osborne in last year’s Autumn Statement could be better spent on other projects locally.

She said: “I stand with Hythe, Sellindge and I stand with Stanford, a village that I love and live in. I feel and believe there is no need for a lorry park of this size anywhere.

“Spend the money on better things that improve life not take it away.

“If they cannot see that a lorry park of this size will only bring drugs, prostitution and immigrants and one of the biggest travelling sites in Kent they are fools. Spend the money on doctors, nurses, dentists and our army, schools and navy.”
