The mother of a teenager murdered in 2013 says she is “disgusted” by an apology issued by a national newspaper.

MailOnline used a picture of Jayden Parkinson in a montage about people believed to be missing in the Manchester Arena bombing, more than three years after the teenager died.

Samantha Shrewsbury, whose daughter was killed by her boyfriend Ben Blakeley in December 2013, hit out at the response issued by MailOnline.

Miss Parkinson, 17, used to live in Folkestone and is buried in Cheriton.

She moved to Oxford where she met Blakeley, who strangled his pregnant girlfriend to death and buried her in a churchyard in Didcot.

The website published a viral image supposedly showing missing people the day after the explosion in May at an Ariana Grande concert which killed 22 people and injured another 250.

MailOnline said the image had not originated at the newspaper and had “gone viral by the time we published it” which included a selfie of Miss Parkinson.

Ms Shrewsbury, who has spoken out about domestic abuse since her daughter’s death, said she was “disgusted at the response” which had taken eight weeks to arrive.

A donation of £150 has been made which Ms Shrewsbury said would be going into the Jayden’s Gift account, the charity she set up to help victims of domestic abuse.

She told the BBC: “To see that post the day after the Manchester bombing, it was a nightmare, it took me back 20 steps from where I was.

“I have to deal with this every day, that something reminds me of her. But to have that happen, and then have a half-hearted apology, is a real kick in the teeth.

“I don’t think much of Mail Online – their apology is not accepted.”

In a letter, MailOnline editorial manager Ashlee Gagui, said: “As soon as we understood the photo to be fake, we removed it from our website and internal systems.

“It is with great regret that this error occurred and we accept that the publication of the photo has caused further grief to you and your family.”

Blakeley is now serving a life sentence for her murder after being jailed in 2014.

His younger brother, Jake Blakeley, admitted perverting the course of justice and helping his brother and was jailed in March 2015.
