Police are linking three incidents where shopping trolleys have been thrown onto train tracks in a little over a week, causing disruption for passengers.

Officers were called to Folkestone West station at 6.30pm on Saturday, February 9, following reports of one having struck a train.

It came days after British Transport Police had to halt services in the area after a similar report.

Another incident happened at Folkestone West station on Saturday, February 2.

Officers are now linking the three incidents.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "The trolley [on Saturday] was removed from the scene and the train was taken out of service to be repaired.

"At this stage, it is believed the incident is linked to two other instances of a shopping trolley being thrown onto the tracks at Folkestone West station, on both February 2 and 6.

"Officers are currently investigating, and would ask anyone who witnessed the incidents, or who has any information, to contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 508 of 09/02/19."

Rail services were disrupted last week after another train hit a shopping trolley on Wednesday, February 6.

The locomotive had to be moved backwards to remove the debris after the collision near the station shortly before 7pm.

The electrical current was eventually switched back on and the lines fully reopened.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We are aware of three incidents in Folkestone recently where shopping trolleys have ended up on the railway tracks.

“The people behind this reckless behaviour have not only delayed and damaged trains, but are also putting themselves and innocent passengers in danger.

“In light of these incidents we have increased our security patrols in the area and are working with local retailers to store their trolleys more securely and make sure they’re not left lying around near railway land.

“Anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour should report it immediately to the BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40.”

Southeastern did not wish to comment any further on the matter.
