Police find over 100 cannabis plants in The Street, Hawkinge following alleged burglary in which getaway van rolled onto its roof

11:00, 29 November 2013

Burglars allegedly trying to steal £30,000 worth of cannabis failed in their getaway bid... mounting a bank and rolling their getaway van onto its roof.

Officers were called to a report of a house burglary in The Street, Hawkinge at around 10.30pm on Tuesday night.

They discovered more than 100 cannabis plants and associated growing equipment inside the property.

It is the second discovery in a week after officers seized cannabis plants and equipment from a property in Coolinge Road, Folkestone on Wednesday.

When police arrived, officers saw a man fleeing the scene and a Citroen Berlingo van drove off.

But as they allegedly tried to escape police the van mounted a bank and rolled onto its roof in Standen Lane.

Two men were subsequently arrested after the incident on Tuesday night and have been charged with several offences, including possessing drugs with intent to supply.

Mark Grant, 28, from Liverpool and 32-year-old Ryan Wood of Cornwallis Avenue in Aylesham have been charged with multiple offences including:

  • possession of cannabis with intent to supply,
  • aggravated burglary where cannabis worth £30,000 was stolen
  • being in possession of a tazer
  • aggravated vehicle taking of a Citroen Berlingo without the owners permission.

Wood was also charged with failing to provide a specimen of blood.

Both have been remanded in custody.

Police are still trying to trace a third suspect who is described as being a black male.
