A man was found with serious head injuries in a town centre park after a suspected assault.

Police are at Payers Park in Folkestone and the area remains taped off to establish how he was hurt.

A 26-year-old man from Hythe has been arrested in connection with the incident early this morning.

Forensic officers and patrols have been at the park since early this morning after the victim, a 33-year-old man was found just before 5am.

He was "dazed and confused" and is in hospital in London in "a serious condition", police said.

A spokesman said: "Officers are particularly keen to speak with two men who are believed to have walked through the area at the time and who may have seen something that would assist with the investigation."

Police are continuing to carry out their inquiries at the scene today.

A nearby worker told KentOnline: "I arrived at 8.30am and there were police down here already. They have still closed off Payers Park.

"I asked an officer who said it was an assault."

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We were called just before 5am to reports of an assault at Payers Park.

"One ambulance crew attended. A man with a head injury was treated at the scene before being transferred to William Harvey Hospital."

The main entrance to the nearby Glassworks Sixth Form was blocked off to students earlier this morning.

It is understood, students were unable to access the main entrance but have been allowed into the building through another area.
