Forensics teams have been carrying out an investigation at a block of flats as part of a murder probe following a man's death.

Police have erected a substantial cordon around the scene of the alleged assault at Spencer House in Coolinge Lane, Folkestone.

Officers were called at 8.50pm on Sunday to a report of an assault and the victim, who was in his 60s and has been named locally as Paul Wakefield, was taken to hospital with multiple injuries. He died yesterday.

A 31-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, who were both known to the dead man, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "An investigation by detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate is ongoing and officers are appealing to anyone with information to call."

Crime scene investigators were this morning seen heading into the flats on the junction with Romney Avenue and making their way to the first floor.

The man's death follows two other serious violent incidents in the town at the turn of the year, with a woman in her 40s attacked on The Leas on December 31 and a teenager stabbed in Sandgate Road on January 1.
