Bargain clothes company Primark has recalled thousands of flip-flops following concerns that they may contain dangerous levels of a cancer-causing chemical.

The company issued a statement on its website about the products, which are men's flip-flops in blue, black and khaki.

The company has seven stores in Kent, located in Gravesend, Chatham, Maidstone, Canterbury, Dartford, Thanet and Folkestone.

On its website, Primark stated: "It has come to our attention that the footwear product detailed does not meet the Primark usual high standards for chemical compliance.

"We have found levels of a restricted substance in the product in excess of the 1.0 mg/kg requirement.

"With the safety of our customers and respect for the environment at the forefront of our minds we have taken the decision to recall this product and are therefore inviting you to return this item for a full refund."

A Primark spokesman confirmed to Sky News that the flip flops contain chrysene, a chemical commonly used in dark-coloured dyes.

A "thorough investigation" has now been launched by the shop and all new orders have been suspended, but Primark was unable to confirm the location of the factory where the flip flops were made.

A Primark spokesman told the news outlet: "We take the safety of our customers, and the quality of our products, very seriously, which is why we have chosen to recall three men's flip flops from our Cedar Wood State range.

"All new orders with this factory have been suspended while we carry out a thorough investigation. A full refund is being offered to all customers."

The product, part of its Cedar Wood State range, was on sale in stores earlier this year from January 4 to June 2.

Primark have said that customers who had purchased the item can return it into any store for a full refund, and you will not be required to provide proof of purchase, such as a receipt.
