An investigation is under way this morning after a block of garages caught fire last night.

Fire crews believe the fire spread from a moped which had been deliberately set alight.

Two engines were sent to the garages in Holywell Avenue in Folkestone at 7pm.

Police are now investigating the fire along with fire inspectors.

The fire spread to the roof of the garages and there is visible damage to the outside.

Crew manager for Folkestone's white watch James Kirk said: "A moped was set alight which spread to the roof.

"It seemed to be deliberate. There's an investigation this morning with the police.

"Only the local residents came out as we were dealing with it.

"The wooden roof of three garages was fire damaged. Smoke damage inside and one was used for storage.

"The moped was completely destroyed by fire."

No injuries were reported and the other two garages were empty at the time.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was notified of a fire involving a moped in Holywell Avenue, Folkestone, at 7.18pm on 14 June by KFRS. Officers are conducting initial enquiries in relation to the incident."

Crews were also called to a car fire on the A20 at the Roundhill Tunnels after a black Seat caught fire.

The driver safely managed to get out of the car and call firefighters who put the fire out.

Mr Kirk said the fire had been caused by a fault with the car and the driver was not injured.
