A much-loved bakery is set to close after more than 50 years in a move described as “the end of an era”.
Well-known for its freshly homemade bread, Carmichael’s in Folkestone will shut next Saturday as its owner moves into retirement.
Residents have shared their memories of the Blackbull Road shop, which opened 52 years ago, following today’s announcement.
Shannon Murphy said on social media: “Oh my god.
“Every morning on the way to school I would get a split bun or a gypsy tart.
“Lovely people and food. Thank you for the memories.”
Joyce Cannon added: “What a shame. You could get filled rolls with whatever you wanted and the cakes were delicious.
“It will be sadly missed by a lot of people.”
Linda Tutt had similar sentiments, saying: “Oh my word. It won't be the same.
“I used to go in there after school and then with my kids on their way home from school too.”
Holly wrote: “The end of an era. It has been my favourite bakers since I was little.”
The business enjoys a 4.3-star score on Google Reviews, with customers raving about the sausage rolls and quality bread.
Benoit Laflamme said: “One of the rare real bakeries in the area providing fresh bread.
“I walked away with a really nice fresh spongy white bread everybody enjoyed as well as nice sausage rolls and pies for lunch.
“They’re a little less breakfast-oriented than I was hoping, but what they make is all lovely.’
A firm fan, Frazer Westmoreland, added: “Fantastic food with a friendly atmosphere.
“A fabulous fuel stop if you are in a hurry, a perfect picnic prepared freshly in minutes, or tantalising treats to keep your team happy.
“This wonderful bakery has been serving and supporting the local community for decades and long may it continue.”
