A schoolboy who enjoys pranks has braved the shave to raise money for the NHS.

Jai Moody, 12 and from Folkestone, raised double his £100 target after he was challenged by his mum Sian to raise much needed funds to support frontline workers during the coronavirus outbreak.

The money will be donated to the East Kent Hospitals Charity appeal and aid staff at its hospitals in Ashford, Canterbury and Margate.

The fund has already paid for fridges so staff who have to wear PPE during their shifts can enjoy a cold drink, toiletries for staff to use when showering after a shift, as well as practical assistance and support.

Sian said: "Jai keeps playing prank challenges on me and I keep falling for them, including water being thrown over me.

"He kept asking for a shaved head and as he likes challenges so much I challenged him to raise £100 for the NHS.

"I love his hair and dreaded it being shaved but I also value the NHS and love their dedication through this tough time."

The shave took place over the weekend and donations have so far topped £230.

Other events at the weekend included a virtual pub quiz organised by Stour Chambers, raising almost £300, and Katie King’s virtual concert from her living room, raising more than £530.

The total raised for the charity’s Helping Your Hospitals appeal is now at £23,000.

Fundraising and development officer Dee Neligan said: "We have had an incredible response to our appeal to provide support and wellbeing initiatives for our amazing NHS heroes.

"It means we have been able to provide a range of items to help our staff on the frontline.

"We are responding to requests from wards and departments daily and are so grateful for all of the support from our communities."
