Folkestone driving school instructor David Tomlinson shocked to see Renault Megane coming the opposite direction on Cheriton roundabout

As a driving school car enters a roundabout near Folkestone, all the lessons in the world can't prepare for what happens next.

A silver Renault Megane appears, driving the wrong way on the roundabout, heading straight for oncoming traffic.

Fortunately it was driving instructor David Tomlinson at the wheel, and not one of his pupils.

Mr Tomlinson, who was going home to Hawkinge following a lesson, said: "It would be understandable if it was a foreign driver but it wasn't.

"I saw it was an elderly couple with the man behind the wheel.

"I wanted to stop them and help them turn around because round the next bend they might have collided with somebody.

"But they just weren't moving, and I had to change lanes to get out of the way."

The Renault appears to have negotiated the roundabout without incident, but Mr Tomlinson says the couple had a fortunate escape.

"People approach that roundabout at 25 to 30mph so they were lucky to get away with it really."
