A thug who snatched a wallet from a friendly pensioner has been jailed.

Shane Myles targeted his victim after approaching him for change in the street in Folkestone.

The 30-year-old approached his target, a man in his 70s, in George Lane on June 15, asking for 20p so that he could phone his mother.

When the victim took out his wallet to help, Myles snatched it and ran off.

He later went to a shop in Dover Road and bought vodka, hair gel and other items with the victim's stolen bank card.

The shaken pensioner was then contacted by his bank, who quickly stopped his card before Myles attempted a similar purchase at another store on the same street.

Officers later went to the shop and retrieved CCTV footage of Myles wearing a blue, red and white hooded top, which was later found in his possession when he was arrested.

Myles, of no fixed address, admitted theft and fraud at Canterbury Crown Court on June 29, and was jailed for a year and two months.

Investigating officer PC Adele Tyrer said: "Myles deliberately stole from a more vulnerable member of the community in an offence which would have had a lasting impact on the victim.

"I would urge elderly and vulnerable residents to remain vigilant of criminals who may target them, be that by coming to their front doors, or while they are out and about."
