TikTok video goes viral as man wrongfully given parking ticket at The Stade, Folkestone
05:00, 07 April 2023
A TikTok video showing a driver being wrongly issued with a parking fine has been viewed more than 300,000 times.
The footage was uploaded to the social media site by Troy Azzopardi and shows him questioning the reason for the ticket in Folkestone.
In the clip, the father-of-two approaches his parked Mitsubishi FTO at The Stade, where the traffic warden is placing the notice on his window.
The 38-year-old explains to him that a nearby sign states that no parking permit is needed for his space, and that he has only been there for 10 minutes, when an hour is allowed.
The warden then falls back into the post as he tells Mr Azzopardi to take the issue up with Folkestone & Hythe District Council (FHDC).
Mr Azzopardi's video - which was uploaded last month - has now racked up 329,000 views on TikTok, 861 comments and 7,600 likes.
The dad said: "As I parked up I discussed with him that we would be allowed to park there.
"I literally went for a 10-minute walk and when I got back he was at my car.
"He claimed I needed a permit, but I knew that I didn't."
As the traffic warden walks away from the scene, Mr Azzopardi films the signs which show he is not parked in the 'permit parking area'.
Comments in support of Mr Azzopardi have appeared under the post.
One person said: "Appeal and demand compensation for your time doing so."
Another joked: "He bumped into the sign so he clearly didn't see it!"
Mr Azzopardi appealed the notice and a week later received a response from an FHDC officer, saying: "I have noted your comments and confirm that the penalty charge notice has been cancelled on this occasion."
The incident took place in June 2021, but the TikTok was created in March.
FHDC declined to comment on the matter.
