A major route to the coast has been shut unexpectedly for emergency resurfacing.

The A20 Roundhill Tunnel on the outskirts of Folkestone has been closed in both directions, with contractors already on the scene.

Commuters using the stretch between Junction 13 of the M20 and the A260 Canterbury Road are being diverted via the A259 Churchill Avenue and A260 Canterbury Road at Folkestone.

Motorists are being told to expect delays in the area, and to allow for extra journey time if using the Eurotunnel or a ferry.

Highways officials say repairs are being delayed by strong winds.

Coastbound traffic is advised to follow the Hollow Black Circle symbol and exit the M20 at J13 onto the A259 (Churchill Avenue) and travel east and onto the A260 Canterbury Road.

Then travel towards Spitfire Way roundabout junction at Hawkinge and then return to the A20 coastbound.

London-bound traffic is advised to follow the Hollow Black Square symbol and follow the reverse of Coast bound diversion route.

If heading to/from Port of Dover, consider using the A2/M2.
