A waste tip has reopened after a fire broke out.

Firefighters were called after hot coals were dumped in a waste compactor at the Folkestone Household Waste Recycling Centre yesterday morning.

But the depot in Ross Way opened at around 10.30am today, Kent County Council said.

Crews arrived after smoke was seen coming from the machine. The tip is managed and run by KCC.

KCC spokesman Thom Morris said yesterday: “Hot coals were thrown in after someone tried to dump them in a waste compactor. Staff saw some white smoke billowing and immediately told everyone to leave.

“They are damping down this afternoon to stop it reigniting. We’re envisaging it will be open no later than midday tomorrow.”

An investigation is not likely to take place by the fire service, spokesman Sacha Taylor said.

Two fire engines attended and crews used a hose reel jet to put out the fire which was brought under control in around 20 minutes.

Firefighters remained at the scene for a further 30 minutes to damp down.

No injuries have been reported.
