A woman has been charged with arson after two people were hurt in a Folkestone flat blaze.

The 39-year-old is due in court after the fire broke out in a top floor flat in Bouverie Road West at about 11.40pm on Sunday.

Two people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and released after treatment.

The blaze was described as "very severe" by the watch manager in charge and took three hours to extinguish. Around 80% of the flat is said to be fire-damaged.

Around 20 firefighters were sent to the scene and crews using breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to tackle the flames.

Watch manager John Howard said: "This was a very severe fire. The cause is currently under investigation by our teams and the police."

Meanwhile, police are investing five other fires in the area between Sunday and this morning.

Police found about 100 cannabis plants after being called to a house fire at 7.53am today in Station Road, Lydd.

The fire was on the first floor in what is believed to be a bedroom. Police are searching for the occupants.

Yesterday, police were called to a car on fire in St Michael's Street, at the junction with Dover Road in Folkestone, at 1.30am. An officer on patrol saw flames coming from under the bonnet and up onto the windscreen.

A further fire was located in a wheelie bin about 200 yards up the same road. Both fires were put out within 25 minutes.

On the same day at about 2.50am, police were alerted to a series of bin fires on Shornecliffe Road, Folkestone, that had spread to nearby trees.

The communal recycling bins belonged to a blocks of flats at the Shorncliffe Road junction with Kingsnorth Gardens.

And police are investigating fire damage to a white Peugeot after a fire had been lit at the base of one of the tyres causing it to melt and damaging the rear panel of the car.

It happened sometime between 7pm on Sunday and 11.20am yesterday at Kingsnorth Gardens in Folkestone.

None of the fires are believed to be linked apart from the two in St Michael's Street.
