The woman was walking down Sandgate Road between 7am and 7.30am when she was approached by the gang between the junctions of Castle Hill Avenue and Christ Church Road.

Three of the four men then attacked her and tried to steal her handbag.

But a Good Samaritan intervened and walked the woman away from the scene where she was then able to call 999.

The woman sustained injuries during the attack and was taken to hospital.

Witnesses are now being sought by police who might have seen the attempted robbery.

In particular they want to locate the member of the public who helped the victim.

"We would also like to speak to the gentleman who came forward and helped the victim get to a place of safety."
