Folkestone boss Neil Cugley has responded angrily to the controversial rescheduling of his side’s season-ending trip to Guernsey for a Friday night.

Invicta were due to wrap up their Ryman League Division 1 South campaign with a trip to the Channel Island on Saturday, April 26.

But with Guernsey’s Footes Lane stadium already being used that afternoon, the game has been brought forward to 7.45pm the previous evening.

That means Folkestone will be powerless to affect things on the final day of the season. And if both clubs finish in the top-five, Cugley’s squad might have to fly back to Guernsey for a play-off semi-final just a few days later.

Cugley said: "I’m not happy. If we get in the play-offs and have to play Guernsey on the Tuesday, we might really struggle to get a side out. Players have got to take Friday off and they might not be able to take time off on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"I can’t demand that players take the Tuesday and Wednesday off. Some of them are teachers.”

Guernsey, who were only formed three years ago, were placed in the Ryman League last summer after winning back-to-back promotions in the Combined Counties League.

Their story has captured the imagination but it’s also thrown up plenty of complications, particularly surrounding away travel and kick-off times.

Cugley said: "I don’t like the situation. I don’t think Guernsey should be in the league anyway. They’re nice people and they play football the right way but it’s caused so many problems already. They haven’t even got first call on their own pitch.

"It’s not worked. I didn’t think it would, from day one. It’s a farcical situation. I can’t think they didn’t know about this a long time ago. It’s a mess."
