Neil Cugley admits Folkestone Invicta might need more points than they thought to be safe from relegation

Manager Neil Cugley says Folkestone may need more points than originally predicted to stay in the Ryman League, Premier Division.

Cugley has long been targeting a total of 52 points which he believed would see Invicta retain their status for next season after promotion last summer.

However, the form of the teams in the bottom half of the table means he might have to reassess.

He said: “Last year 50 points was enough to keep Burgess Hill up and that was the highest in any 46-game league.

“It could sneak above the 52 points everyone was predicting. Just because it’s never happpened before doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

"It’s up to us to make sure we are on the right side of it, whatever the number is.”

Despite facing four straight away games, starting at strugglers Leatherhead on Wednesday and including title-chasing Bognor on Saturday (3pm), Cugley says confidence is high after the 1-0 home win over play-off chasing Wingate & Finchley at the weeekend.

He said: “It wasn’t quite as good as our performances were in November but we were good and we should have put the game to bed in the first half.

"They didn’t really look like scoring, although Tim Roberts did well for us with some good catches on his 200th appearance for the club.

“I’d take a point from each of the four (away) games. We don’t ever go away looking for a point, we set up to go out and win but a point away from home in this division is a decent return.

“Leatherhead and Bognor are both good footballing sides and like to play the right way. Hopefully, they should be good games.

“I thought we deserved something against Bognor when we ended up losing at home so hopefully we can get that on Saturday.”

An X-ray on Ronnie Dolan’s persistent ankle injury showed no break but he is awaiting a scan to assess the damage but Callum Davies and Ashley Miller return.
