Folkestone have signed goalkeeper Henry Newcombe after he impressed against them in two friendlies.

Newcombe was in the Deal team who beat Invicta 3-2 last week, coming on as a half-time substitute.

He then turned out for Whitstable as Invicta won 3-1 at Cheriton Road on Saturday.

Folkestone manager Neil Cugley liked the look of the former Gillingham and Wycombe youngster, who started pre-season at Ramsgate.

Rams didn't have room for him but he's ideal competition for Invicta No.1 Tim Roberts.

Cugley said: "He's impressed me. I think he's a good signing. He's a young lad with a lot of potential.

"He lives in Deal and played the second half against us last week and then he played against us on Saturday.

"Ramsgate said they couldn't have him so I had a quick chat with him and he signed.

"It gives us nice balance to the squad.

"Tim's the No.1 but it's good competition for him.

"We had Nick Shaw as back-up last year but he couldn't commit this season so it was an area we had to sort out.

"I've had a few people over the years but I think this lad has a little more about him - he could push Tim eventually.

"Tim's a very good goalie but he's had it quite easy. Everybody needs a bit of competition sometimes."

Ira Jackson opened the scoring against Whitstable but his future is still not resolved.

Cugley said: "There's nothing on that yet. He scored on Saturday and did all right.

"He's another one we're looking at but I've not had time to sit down with him yet."

There is, however, news on trialist defender Charlie Dickens, with Cugley saying: "It might be that he goes somewhere to get regular football but that doesn't mean he won't sign for us dual-reg."

Kieron McCann and Callum Davies also scored in the win over Whitstable but Cugley described the performance as "patchy".

Invicta won 1-0 at Ramsgate last night and complete pre-season with a trip to Ashford this Saturday.

Cugley said: "We've still not got going in the final third but hopefully we can resolve that.

"At the moment none of our forwards have really shone.

"That can be down to confidence sometimes.

"If one of them starts finding some of form, it brings out more in the others.

"Pre-season can be strange. You have ups and downs and as soon as the first league game starts, you can't remember any of the pre-season games."
