Folkestone Invicta had the opportunity to call Saturday’s game off at Bowers & Pitsea after a bad early injury - but played on for the win.

Jordan Wright suffered a double leg fracture after a poor tackle just two minutes into their Isthmian League Premier Division fixture. The players decided to play on and “win it for Jordan”.

Invicta's 3-2 victory keeps them well on course for a play-off place. Tonight (Tuesday) they head to relegation-threatened Brightlingsea Regent.

Commenting on a difficult weekend match, Folkestone boss Neil Cugley said: “The injury was obviously a big disappointment.

“Their staff and people were very good about it. I am not saying the bloke meant to do it, I think it was a red card but I don’t think he intended to injure him or anything like that.

"It was early in the game, (players are) trying to show you are up for the game but I felt it was a clumsy tackle but we move on.

"I don’t think anyone at our standard goes out to try and injure someone. Abi (Winstanley), our physio, and their people were excellent, including their management. They were very good.”

There was a 15-minute delay and with the players off the field the opposition manager offered Folkestone the chance to call it off.

Cugley explained the situation: “I said to the payers, ‘what do you want to do?’. They said they wanted to go out and get a win for Jordan, which they did.

“You have to be careful about people not getting too excited about it but they didn’t and the lad who was involved, he was on a booking.

"They took him off in that first half and that was probably the right thing to do.”

Invicta were clearly rattled by the injury and let in a 25th-minute goal, but David Smith got one back just before the break.

“I had to remind them at half-time they were the ones who wanted to play the game,” said the Invicta boss.

“If they wanted to play it, get on with it, and they were outstanding in the second half, really good.

"That was maybe the best we had played for a long, long time and the only disappointment was that we did concede a goal right near the end.

"They were throwing everything at us but we controlled the game and were very good, played some super stuff and the third goal was of real quality, a great move.”

Smith assisted Ade Yusuff for their second and added a third on 68 minutes before Bowers claimed a goal back a minute from time.
