Competition for places is really hotting up at Folkestone Invicta.

Jon Pilbeam, Ashley Miller, Nat Blanks and Jordan Wright all started Saturday’s friendly against Dartford on the bench and Josh Vincent wasn’t even in the squad.

New signings Carl Rook, Josh Stanford and Phil Starkey have given Neil Cugley welcome selection headaches all over the pitch.

Now the manager has less than three weeks to work out his best XI before Folkestone kick off the new Ryman League season at home to Molesey on Saturday, August 8.

Cugley said: "I’m trying to get 14 or 15 players that are all fighting for their place.

"Jordan Wright did well when he came on, that’s the first half-hour he’s had and he’s a quality player. Callum Wraight also did well and I was pleased.

"There are still things we’re looking at. We’re not quite sure about the balance of the side and we’ve got 14 or 15 players. Who’s going to be better than who? We don’t know.

"Rooky got an hour, so that was good, he gave us another option up there.

"Draycott started, Miller came on and I thought he did well, Pilly’s come on, Stanford played and I thought (Ronnie) Dolan had a good game.

"That’s what we want – people disappointed that they’re not playing and fighting for their places."
