The arrival of former Gills star Ashley Miller from Hythe this week signalled Folkestone’s big intentions for next season.

Miller could make his Invicta debut against promotion rivals Merstham on Saturday after agreeing to leave Reachfields and sign for Neil Cugley’s side.

The 20-year-old, once linked with a dream transfer to Liverpool, made his Gills debut aged 16 before making a series of loan moves. He had short spells with Ramsgate, Hythe, Tonbridge and Maidstone, who he joined permanently on the eve of this season.

But Miller stayed with the Stones for just a few weeks, moving on to Hythe, where he scored nine times in 15 appearances.

He’s now a Folkestone player, though, and Cugley sees him playing a big role not only for the rest of this season but beyond.

He said: "Ashley’s a big asset and we’re trying to build something here.

"When you look at the average age of the team, it’s a long-term plan and these players tick the boxes for next season.

"Ronnie Dolan, Jordan Wright and Ashley Miller are all young lads and that’s what we want.

"I’ve rebuilt the squad 10 or 11 times. Most years, the whole team’s taken away from me.

"Now it’s getting to the stage where I’m trying to tick the boxes in terms of certain players being part of what we’re doing next year."
