Folkestone Invicta manager Neil Cugley says players will keep themselves in shape during second national lockdown
06:00, 05 November 2020
Neil Cugley is confident Folkestone players will stay in shape when the country goes back into lockdown.
Invicta will see their Isthmian Premier campaign halted for a month as the government tries to get a grip on the Covid-19 crisis.
They won their final game before the new lockdown measures came into force, 2-1 at home to Hornchurch on Tuesday night - with Josh Vincent scoring a goal of the season contender .
Boss Cugley said: “It’s frustrating for everybody because a lot of hard work has gone in but some things are more important than football.
“We’ve got to take it on the chin and hope we get back playing after a month.
“It might end up being longer, we just don’t know, you could talk about it all day.
“At the end of the day they’ve got to do what’s right.
“If football suffers, there’s not a lot you can do about it.
“I think there will need to be a period of training before we start again - four or five weeks is a long time to be out - but the players won’t mind playing twice a week after Christmas and piling all the games in, if it gets to that stage.
“I’m sure they will look after themselves. Players are a bit obsessed with fitness now.
“They’re all on the message group saying what they’ve done but that’s not just my team, that’s football in general.
“They all want to look after themselves and not let themselves down. It might have been different in my day!”
Folkestone conceded a last-minute decider at Walton Casuals in the FA Trophy final qualifying round on Saturday.
Josh Vincent cancelled out Adam Coombes’ opener but a second for the ex-Welling striker settled the tie.
“It was just so frustrating,” said Cugley. “We got back to 1-1 and dominated but we’ve not scored the second goal.
“Whether that’s bad luck, poor finishing or poor decision-making in and around the box, we haven’t done it.
“We should have won it before they got their second goal, we should have been comfortable.
“We played all right, we just need to be clinical in the final third. It’s a new front line from last year and it would be nice if they clicked a little bit and took the pressure off the defence.”
