Scott Heard’s first Folkestone goal this season came after discussions over his lack of contributions at the top-end of the pitch, manager Andy Drury revealed.

Midfielder Heard had remarkably not scored a goal for Isthmian Premier Invicta in their 2023/24 campaign until last weekend.

But he doubled Folkestone’s tally midway through the first half in their impressive 2-0 victory at promotion-chasing Enfield Town after striker Tom Derry had broken the deadlock.

“I did chat to him the other day,” said Drury. “He hasn’t got enough goals and he has got a few assists - but not enough.

“A lot of that comes down to where he is on the pitch at certain times. So, we’ve worked on it and that paid off.”

And Drury hopes Heard can begin contributing regularly before the end of the campaign.

He said: “If we get another six or seven out of Heardy this season, that’s a decent return.

“He was good on Saturday and gives us a lot of energy. He has done well in the last few games.

“As long as we keep Heardy in the right shape, I think he will score more goals.”

Invicta’s boss had watched Enfield beat Haringey 1-0 last Tuesday and set up a game-plan after that match.

The win means Folkestone remain unbeaten from their three matches in 2024. They had lost six on the spin prior to an improved run which has eased their relegation fears.

Invicta, who visit Haringey this Saturday and Canvey Island on Tuesday, still are a long way off competing for a play-off place.

“That’s not really something we can set out to achieve this year now,” conceded Drury, who signed former Gillingham, Ebbsfleet, Dover and Maidstone midfielder Dean Rance this week, as well as bringing back former striker Louis Collins.

“It’s about taking each game as it comes and seeing where we can go.”

Ex-Tonbridge forward Ruben Soares-Junior has left the club for divisional rivals Billericay.

Drury said: “I didn’t see where he was going to fit in with what we’re doing with us changing formation.

“Billericay came in last Monday and that’s closer to home for him, so it made sense for everyone for Ruben to move on.”

Their scheduled clash with Cray Wanderers on Tuesday night was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
