Folkestone Invicta are ready to make history by winning their first ever league title at a packed Fullicks Stadium on Good Friday.

Victory at home to Walton & Hersham would see Neil Cugley’s side crowned champions of Ryman League Division 1 South with five games to spare.

They’ve been top of the table since August and can now banish four years of play-off heartbreak by going up automatically.

Club bosses hope reduced admission (£5 adults, £3 concessions) will swell the crowd above 1,000 on a day when no other clubs in the area are playing at home.

Manager Neil Cugley, who’s approaching 1,000 games and 20 years in charge at Folkestone, has seen almost everything during that time – but never a game quite like this.

He said: "It’s hard to explain. I’m proud. We’ve reduced the admission prices because we want people there to get behind the team and enjoy the day for the whole town.

"Somebody looked up the records and it’s 1964 when this last happened (the old Folkestone Town won Southern League Division 1). It shows how long a club like this has waited to win a senior league title so hopefully people come along and enjoy it.

"Ages ago I said I could see this happening, that it was going to be the Good Friday game. As long as we kept winning and getting points, it was going to be.

"It would be nice now to do it in front of our own fans.

"I’ve never been one to worry about big games, I love them. I’m looking forward to Friday – hopefully we get a good crowd and off we go. I can’t wait."

Folkestone, 16 points clear with six games to go, are yet to be beaten in 2016.

They’ve put together a 13-match unbeaten run since losing to Hythe at Christmas and have won their last 12 games at home.

Cugley said: "The players have been brilliant and everything’s clicked in the last few weeks. We’ve had some difficult games, come through them and not lost.

"We’ve still got to get one more win. I don’t think (second-placed) Dorking are going to lose many games, so we’ve got to make sure we get it finished.

"If anything, there’s a little less pressure because we’ve got so many games to do it. It’s one of those we’ve got to go out and enjoy – and the players have enjoyed the last few games.

"We used to be one of those teams that would be in the play-offs, trying to get further up or trying to win a game and going right to the wire, like all the others are doing now.

"But this is a lovely feeling. It’s exactly how we wanted it to be.

"Hopefully, we can perform in front of our own people. We’d like to do it but Walton & Hersham aren’t going to let us if they can help it."

Cugley has some big selection dilemmas ahead of the game.

He said: "Carl Rook did well again on Saturday but Harry Smith came off the bench and set up the second goal. Jordan Wright scored the second goal and Micheal Everitt didn’t play, so you look at our bench now and it’s strong.

"The players should enjoy this because it isn’t like any other game and it’s one of those things that might never happen again.

"To be in a championship-winning team, there’s not loads of players who do that."

Friday’s game kicks off at 3pm, with fans advised to arrive early.
