Athlete rescues sheep during five-mile race

South Kent Harriers have had some pleasing results in the past week - with one of their members also rescuing a sheep mid-race at the Staplehurst 5 miler.
Martin Salmon completed the undulating Staplehurst course around country lanes in 35.07 while Alan Randall, who has been injured, ran and walked round in 47.39. On the way round he rescued a sheep who was stuck in a wire fence. He was quite the local hero!
In the Kent track 10,000 metres Championship held at Dartford Central Park, after a miscount of laps, Raymond Pearce has finally been declared Kent over-60s champion. His time was a fast 40 minutes 48 seconds.
Another champion was Sarah Harvey who was first lady in the Nice Work American Independence Day virtual run over a distance of 10km in a field of 25.
In a midweek race, as part of the Bedgebury 10k series, South Kent Harriers fielded three runners all of whom ran well. First in for the club was Salmon, who finished in 12th place in a field of 80 runners in 45.07. He was also first in the over-50 category.
New member Amy Seager was 23rd and also second senior lady, an impressive debut.
Andy Fogg was SKH’s third runner home, clocking 53.14 in 36th place and was second in the over-55 category.
In a 10k race held in Rye on Friday on a flat and fast course from Rye Harbour Sailing Club along to Winchelsea Beach, out against the wind and back, four South Kent Harriers took part.
Salmon ran well, finishing second over 50 in a time of 44.49, followed by Seager who completed the distance in a faster time than her last race, running a speedy 49.04.
Most delighted of all was Andy Fogg who took a massive four minutes off his personal best to record 52.27. Just behind and nursing a hamstring injury was Jane Wren in a good time in the circumstances of 52.31.
Meanwhile in the Farnborough Winter Half Marathon, Kevin Gregory ran a personal best time of 1:39.18 which was over seven minutes faster than his previous best time.
He was in the top quarter of the 770 field and fifth in his age category (over-60). He has shown considerable improvement recently due to consistent, hard training.
n Four South Kent Harriers took part in the Bewl Water 15-mile race.
Mel Satchwell said: “It was the toughest trail I have completed. Eleven miles of mud, mud and more mud!
“It was like a complete ice rink of muddy very deep puddles and four miles of hills to the finish.”
First in for the club was Marie Watson, who was 148th overall and fourth over-50 lady. Martin Salmon was 195th and 24th in his age category.
Satchwell lost her shoes twice and found the sight of club-mate Royd Powell falling over and being completely immersed in mud hilarious.
In other events Gary Frake and Illyan Tytel completed the Saxons, Vikings and Normans Olympic Challenge at Betteshanger on Saturday and the Flamingo Challenge on Sunday, running 14 miles on both days.
Keith Punnett and Lance Boseley both took part in the Channel 70 Cycle Challenge on Sunday. Both completed 50 miles in 3hrs 32min.
They found the course which started and finished in St Mary in the Marsh was fast and very scenic.
It was well organised and marshalled on behalf of the Channel Rotary Club, along with two others they raised £400 for rotary charities.
