The Folkestone and Ashford branches of Canton Martial Arts shone at the Canton Black Belt Academy National Karate Championships in Eastbourne.
Folkestone’s Rexford Brock and Casper Brock became national champions in sparring while clubmate Amelia Heskett-Down won the national title in kata from more than 600 in attendance at the championships.
Folkestone senior instructor jokyu Jay Tennis said: “Seeing the determination and level of preparation these students put into their training showed just how much they wanted to not only compete but win - especially with the younger competitors as this was their first-ever tournament.
“But they all overcame their fears and nerves and gave it their all, emerging with [their] heads held high. Myself and the whole leadership team are extremely proud of all of them.”
Meanwhile, 30 students were selected from the Ashford branch for the event’s first tournament post-pandemic.
National title winners included Karen Newman, Lisa Collins, Cameron Spencer, Denis Luca, Connie Brunger, Arthur Brown, Billy Reader, Reon Gilbert-Addo, Eric Lu and Naomi Dyl.
Competition organiser and senior instructor Richard Canton said: “It meant the talent was very hungry for success and the skill level was at an all-time high.
“Each person, from those competing at their first event to seasoned professionals, could feel the pressure but they all performed brilliantly.”
Ashford branch manager and head instructor Lisa Collins added: “I am so proud of the students, each of them whether they won or entered. This shows great courage and the willingness to feel the fear and do it anyway.
“We have been practising for this national event for months and to say that everyone performed remarkably is an understatement.”
