The face of Gravesend’s town centre is to be transformed as plans for a new £75m transport quarter are unveiled.

Gravesham Borough Council has joined forces with Kent Highways Services and Network Rail to create designs for a six-year redevelopment scheme, including a new transport hub bringing together public transport and a new traffic system.

Key points in the multi-million pound project also include an improved railway station with a bus interchange next door, a new two-way road, more than 400 car parking spaces, new homes and a public square by the civic centre.

Gravesham council leader Cllr Mike Snelling said: "Gravesend is going places and this development will set the tone for regeneration for decades. Presently the town is divided from the station by an awkward one-way system. This scheme seeks to unite public transport with the rest of the town."

An exhibition of the plans will be at Towncentric in St George’s Square until June 26, and at the civic centre from June 29 to July 10, so the public can give feedback.

The council is also involving local schools in projects related to the plans.

Results of the consultation will be published in September, an outline planning application submitted to the council shortly afterwards, and construction is expected to begin next spring.
