Two fire engines and police were called to the scene in White Post Lane, Sole Street, at around 10.40pm last night.
The bird aviary, thought to have been at least 10 square metres in size, was being used to raise racing pigeons. Between 20 and 30 birds were being kept there, all of which were killed.
It took an hour to completely extinguish the blaze and police are investigating to determine the cause.
