Gravesend kicks off Chinese New Year with lion awakening

The Year of the Dog was kicked off in the town with an annual Chinese New Year dragon performance.

More than 100 primary school children from the area filled up Community Square, Gravesend, along with the mayor of Gravesham, Cllr Harold Craske, at 11am on Tuesday, February 20, to watch traditional Chinese entertainment, the including the awakening of a lion.

The lion received green leaves, in the shape of a cabbage, from Cllr Craske and business owners.

After the performance, those who turned out to the event headed into the Civic Centre where there were Chinese martial arts, singing, dancing and music.
