A woman is in a critical but stable condition after being airlifted to hospital following an incident in Gravesend on Tuesday afternoon.

She was wheeled away from Chantry Court, Gordon Place, on a medical bed before being transferred into the air ambulance. Police are not revealing the nature of her injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a woman shouting for help from a balcony before several emergency vehicles arrived and a man tried to run out of the main entrance to flats.

A spokesman for Kent Police said they were called at 2.56pm due to concern for the welfare of a woman at a private residential address in Gordon Place, Gravesend. Officers quickly sealed off the road at both ends.

Alexis Browne ,18, was with her twin brother, Toby, and several friends in Fort Gardens opposite Chantry Court.

She said: "We saw lots of police turn up and then a man tried running out of the front door and was pushed back in. The man was shouting.

"He had black hair with a little bit of a beard."

Miss Browne said she first became aware of a commotion at about 3pm.

"Someone from the top floor on a balcony was shouting 'Help'. It was a woman."

Initial reports on social media said there had been a stabbing but Kent Police have said this is not the case.

About 10 emergency vehicles were outside the nine-floor building, including police, ambulance and fire brigade.

The Kent Air Ambulance landed in the Riverside Leisure Area and a person was seen being wheeled on a stretcher to the helicopter, which took off just after 4.30pm.
