Brixton O2 Academy Asake crush: Gravesend family pay tribute to security guard killed

The family of a security guard killed in the Brixton O2 Academy crush have paid tribute to him.

Gaby Hutchinson, from Gravesend, died while working at the London venue on Thursday for Afrobeats artist Asake's show.

The 23-year-old was in the Academy's foyer entrance when a number of people stormed the site.

Gaby died in hospital on Monday.

The security guard's family have said losing Gaby is a "pain that can't compare".

Relatives told the BBC Gaby loved with a whole heart and was fiercely protective.

"Gaby has brought so much love, laughter and inappropriate jokes into our lives and will forever be our baby, our daughter, our sister, our man and our joy.

"Getting 23 years of Gaby's life was a blessing and one we will never forget. Gaby will forever live on in our hearts.

"No-one should go to work and not come home."

Gaby was a contractor on the night and dreamt of becoming a dog handler.

They were also a member of Gravesham Girls and Women FC.

The club also paid tribute on Facebook saying: "Gaby Hutchinson was a long-standing member of Gravesham Girls and Women’s Football Club, who had been with the club since 2010.

"We are all truly devastated by their untimely loss and they will be very much missed by everyone.

"The club send our heartfelt condolences to all Gaby’s family and loved ones at this very sad time."

Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, from Newham, east London, also died on Saturday from her injuries and a 21 year-old woman remains in a critical condition in hospital.

The Metropolitan Police are working to establish what happened but describe the incident as "large and complex".

The O2 Academy has offered "heartfelt condolences" to Gaby Hutchinson's family and friends.

A spokesman said: "We continue to be devastated by this tragic situation and are fully supporting the ongoing situation."
