Ford: We won't be in awe of ex-England men
00:00, 25 October 2001
GRAVESEND & Northfleet manager Andy Ford insists that his players will not be intimidated when they face former England internationals Nigel Clough and Des Walker in Saturday's AXA sponsored FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at Burton.
The pair, with 73 England caps between them, present a formidable hurdle for the Fleet in their efforts to reach the first round proper and the prize of £20,000 in sponsorship money. Clough, player-manager of the Unibond Premier League leaders, has just returned from injury and is likely to play behind the front two. Walker, capped 59 times for England, signed for the club last week for the rest of the season following his release in May by Sheffield Wednesday.
He made his debut in Tuesday's match with Matlock and is expected to start on Saturday.
Ford said: "While we have the greatest respect for Nigel Clough and Des Walker, I can assure our supporters that we will not be overwhelmed by their presence. We done our homework and it will be all about what we do on the day rather than what Nigel Clough and Des Walker do. We might even blind them with our pace."
"We're going up on Friday night and staying in Nottingham overnight so our preparation will be thorough."
Suspensions deny Fleet the services of Matt Lee and Danny Lye while Justin Skinner (hamstring) and Paul Booth (knee ligaments) are doubtful. Midfielder Steve McKimm, recently signed from Kingstonian, is eligible but defender Nick Burton is not, having played for former club Hampton in a previous round.
Should a replay be necessary it will be at Stonebridge Road on Wednesday, October 31, kick off 7.45pm.
