Former Gravesham mayor and councillor Peter Hart has died

A former mayor and councillor has passed away.

Peter Hart, who was Gravesham Mayor in 1988, died last night.

Mr Hart has been described as a "true gentleman" who knew "everything there is to know about politics."

Cllr Mick Wenban (Ind), who knew the former councillor for more than 30 years, said: "Peter was a really lovely man and a complete gentleman. Politics was his life and blood."

Melanie Norris, Director, Communities at Gravesham council, said: “Peter was made a councillor in 1983 and served two terms in the Higham Ward until 1991. During his time on the Council he also served the Borough as Mayor in 1988.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Cllr Bryan Sweetland (Con) also paid tribute to Mr Hart.

He said: "Very sad to hear this morning that our good friend Peter Hart has fought his last campaign. RIP Peter."

Cllr Shane Mochri-Cox (Lab) replied: "Very sorry to hear this Bryan and @graveshamtories despite the political differences Peter was always very polite and engaging in my dealings with him.

"The campaign trail and count will not be the same."
