Traffic is moving slowly on the London-bound carriageway of the A2 after a four-car crash just before the Bluewater turn-off.
Police, ambulance crews and fire engines all attended the scene between Ebbsfleet and Bean at just before 12.30pm.
One woman, who was initially thought to be trapped by the pile-up, was led to safety and taken into the care of an ambulance crew.
Congestion is also affecting Valley Drive in Gravesend. There is as yet no estimate as to when traffic conditions will return to normal.
Shoppers heading towards Lakeside are also being caught in long delays at the Dartford Crossing due to the sheer weight of traffic trying to reach Essex.
