Police and National Highways' traffic officers were sent to help with the clear up.

National Highways tweeted: "There are approximately 5 miles of congestion on approach causing delays of 60 minutes above normal travel time."

The queues are said to stretch back past the M25 turn-off, with roads also struggling in Swanscombe and Greenhithe.

At 6.56pm, an update from National Highways said: "Traffic is stopped on the #A2 east within the #A2260 junction (#Ebbsfleet) due to a multi vehicle collision.

"Traffic Officers are working to remove vehicles from live lane.

"There is 6 miles of congestion on approach causing 70 min delays above normal travel time."

As of 7.15pm, all lanes had been reopened.

Shortly afterwards, National Highways said: "There are 5 mile of congestion following this incident causing 35 min delays above normal travel time. Please allow time for delays to clear."

Many of the motorists caught up in the queues on the A2 could also have been impacted by an earlier oil spill on the M25 near the Dartford Crossing which resulted in hours of delays.

Two lanes of the M25 are to remain shut overnight while they are resurfaced.
