Comic book fans have somewhere to go after new shop opens in Queen Street, Gravesend

BAM! Not only has the Man of Steel landed in Gravesend… THWAPP! But there’s Spiderman… ZLONK! Batman… POW! Captain America and Iron Man too … KER-SPLOOSH!
Former teacher Stephen Field realised that with great power comes great responsibility, and for Gravesend comic book fans, they finally have somewhere to go.
Mr Field, who has opened up Chrysalis Comics in Queen Street, said: “I had to retire through ill health after having a back injury, and really it was a case of ‘do I stay sat on my backside or do I do something?’
“I looked around Gravesend and it has so many shops that seemed to be doing the same sort of thing, and I thought it was time for something different.
“I had a list of different ideas, but I realised you have to drive miles to get a comic and the related merchandise that goes with it.”
Comic book fans can not only get their monthly fix from the shop, but there is also a website and the option to subscribe to ensure the latest issue is in your hands.
Mr Field added: “I wouldn’t say I’m as passionate about comics as some of my customers, but I do like to read them as a pastime and I’ve got a small collection of them. But to proper comic book fans, I’m a novice.
“I like any comics really, but especially those with good characters and a bit of depth to the story.
“The most popular comic in the shop is Spiderman, and I think that’s because of the rich history. But all ages are coming in, whether it’s kids getting into it or long-time collectors. I’d just say come in and have a look around.”
