Kate French returned from the Modern Pentathlon European Junior Championships with a silver medal.

She finished runner-up to Hungary’s reigning world junior champion Sarolta Kovacs, an athlete who has achieved the London 2012 Olympic qualifying standard.

French, from Gravesend, also helped Britain to a bronze medal in the team event, alongside Kerry Prise and Rebecca Wain, at the competition in Szekesfehervar, Hungary.

French (pictured) is in good form and at the recent Budapest Cup the 21-year-old finished second behind Samantha Murray – one of four members chosen for the GB Olympic team.

French started the recent event in Hungary in great form, winning the fencing competition with 26 victories, the first time she had won the fencing event at a major competition.

In the swim, French finished 11th, then 20th in the ride and fifth in the combined event to finish second overall. She crossed the finish line 25 seconds behind Kovacs.

French is training at the Pentathlon GB High Performance Centre at the University of Bath.
