An overturned lorry closed four lanes of the A2 during rush hour.
The incident on Monday afternoon took place shortly after 5.30pm on the London bound carriageway just after the Tollgate junction at Gravesend.
All lanes heading London bound had to be closed after the lorry shed its load and drivers were warned to avoid the area.
Surrounding roads in Northfleet, Cobham and Greenhithe also saw heavy increases in traffic as did the M2 motorway in Medway.
One motorist, Luke Hollands from Gillingham, said: "I joined the A2 from the M2 and every lane was at a complete standstill. There was no hope of us moving anywhere. It was so hopeless that quite a few people were turning off their engines and getting out of their cars to enjoy the last rays of sun on what would have been a nice summer's evening.
"After three hours of sitting in traffic I managed to move just far enough to make my escape via Sole Street."
