Road bosses have promised to again tidy up a filthy roadside parking area used by lorry drivers, just months after it was closed for weeks for a deep clean.

The unofficial lorry park just off the A2, in Marling Way, Gravesend, has been littered with tyres, food waste, plastic bags, cardboard boxes and other rubbish for much of the year.

Highways England (HE) owns the site and closed it for a major clean-up on March 24. It was a month before it reopened due to the severity of the filth but taxpayers’ money spent on it has proved wasted.

Even the on-site skip has disappeared and HE is now facing criticism from a Kent County Council (KCC) councillor over their management of the site.

Cllr Diane Marsh (Con), who represents Gravesham East at Maidstone’s County Hall, said: “There are no bins in that lorry park. Nobody seems to want it or take any of the responsibility.

“People keep saying they need to do this or need to do that, but they just point the finger.

“HE say that they spent a considerable amount of time and money to reopen the lorry park but say there is no simple solution. How long does it take for a dustbin to be put on site?”

It is not just the absence of dustbins proving an issue, as there are also no toilets. Human waste was among the filth that needed clearing when specialist cleaners were brought in back in March, as well as rats and oil.

HE continues to work with its contractor to find a long-term solution, but has said that the site, which has up to 30 parking spaces, will be cleaned up within the next month.

It is not known whether it will need to be closed, which earlier this year led to an increase in the number lorries parking dangerously along the hard shoulder on the A2.

If another deep clean is required, lorry drivers would have to go to Medway or Thurrock in Essex for the nearest service station with parking.
