Man charged with assault after victim's turban allegedly ripped off in Gravesend

Officers have charged an 18-year-old man with a religiously motivated assault.

The charges follow an incident in Milton Place, Gravesend, where a man had his turban forcefully removed.

Police attended the scene on Monday, March 26, and arrested a man nearby at 4.30pm.

Andrew Cassidy, of no fixed address, was charged with religiously aggravated common assault and common assault on Tuesday, March 27.

Chief inspector Andy Gadd, Gravesham district commander, said: "We are treating this as an isolated incident.

"We have strong community partnerships within Gravesham and continue to work closely with these organisations to ensure everyone continues to feel safe when visiting or working within Gravesham."

Mr Cassidy appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, March 28.

He was bailed to appear before the same court on Wednesday, May 2.
