More than 44,000 untaxed cigarettes and hundreds of illegal vapes seized from Gravesend shops

Several shops have been caught hiding thousands of untaxed cigarettes behind false walls and other hiding places.
More than 44,000 illicit cigarettes were found at eight separate premises in Gravesend following inspections.
Also uncovered were 126 nicotine pouches, 8.65kg of tobacco and 103 packets of shisha.
The action was taken by the police, Trading Standards and Gravesham Council on Monday, July 29.
Police inspector Kirsty Dunne said the haul shows the “scale of the problem” as well as the “alleged lengths” people will go to not get caught.
She added: “The sale of illicit cigarettes and tobacco poses a serious health risk to consumers and also hinders law-abiding businesses.
“We will continue to work with our partners to stamp out the unregulated tobacco trade and ensure those responsible are held to account for their actions.”
