A spectator who saw the death of a cyclist unfold at the town’s Cyclopark has described the events that took place.

Cameron Piper was watching his dad compete in a race in Watling Street, Gravesend, at around 12pm on Saturday, April 7, when Chris Hewitt, who was also racing, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

The 18-year-old from Maidstone said the cyclist was taking part in the League of Racing Veterans’ group C race, which is an age range between 50 and 59, when he was spotted collapsed on the floor by two competitors.

Riders administered CPR on Mr Hewitt before road ambulance crews turned up, soon followed by the air ambulance.

A defibrillator at the Cyclopark was used to try and resuscitate him.

Another incident had happened around the same time where a man is suspected to have broken his collar bone.

Mr Piper said: “I know that ambulance crews focused on the man who is suspected of having a heart attack.

“He was spotted unconscious by a couple of riders where they took it upon themselves to apply CPR.

“Marshalls were not aware at this point.

“After the first two road ambulance crews arrived we had the first air ambulance.

“Another air ambulance arrived and then we had two police cars arrive.

“They closed the track and a lot of people thought it wasn’t too bad but when they saw the air ambulance arrive, they realised that this was serious and there would be nothing on for the rest of the day.

“I was a bit worried because my dad was participating in the event.

“A lot of people didn’t realise there were two different incidents.

“Some of the marshalls looked quite shaken.

“I have seen some people fall off their bikes but this is very uncommon.”

The event was hosted by Maidstone based cycling club, San Fairy Ann.

It was supposed to go on until 4pm but it was cancelled after the first race due to the incident.

The cycling club where Chris Hewitt belonged to has paid tribute to their dear friend.

The club said on Facebook: “It is with unimaginable shock and sadness that we have to share the sudden passing of our dear friend and club mate Chris Hewitt.

“Whilst circumstances are not completely clear it would appear Chris suffered a cardiac arrest whilst racing at Cyclopark on Saturday, April 7.

“Despite prolonged attempts by marshalls, fellow cyclists and ambulance crews, Chris did not pull through.

“We would like to thank them all for their efforts.

“There are no words to describe the massive loss the club is feeling at present. Being a small club we are a very close group and SRVC is a family as well as a cycling club, this weekend we have lost a family member.

“Of course our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time, should you wish to share your sympathy then please feel free to post below.

“For Chris, RIP would seem inappropriate; he didn't know how to rest.

“Let's just say, RIP ride in paradise.”
