A councillor is disappointed schools are not embracing green energy as a grammar school plans to build a science block without solar panels.
Cllr Andy Booth (Con) shared his concerns that school buildings are not as sustainable as possible at Kent County Council's planning committee yesterday.
Plans for an extension to a science building at Mayfield Grammar School in Gravesend were approved unanimously despite Cllr Booth's worries.
He said: "Considering the large amount of flat roof on this proposal, it is unfortunate that the applicant hasn't made use of solar panels.
"Bearing in mind this is a science block, they could be waving a very large flag for green credentials and sustainability."
The current science building has a flat roof measuring at 6.8m tall, which will be extended to include an additional four classrooms.
The extension will provide a permanent solution for the selective school as the modular temporary facility will be demolished.
Mayfield Grammar has been contacted for a comment.
