Children have teamed up with pensioners for an intergenerational project.

Little ones at Northfleet Nursery School and residents at Dene Holm Residential Care Home will be visiting each other once a fortnight.

The project started on Monday with the youngsters visiting the home in Dene Holm Road, Northfleet, to make Christmas cards and sing carols.

Different groups of children, aged three and four, visited in the morning and the afternoon.

For their second get-together, the residents were invited to watch the children’s Nativity play at the school in London Road.

Two of the home’s residents have also been trained to be Beanstalk volunteers and will visit the school to read to the children.

Head teacher Panna Nagar said: “This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, so we’re delighted to have started.

“Some of the children don’t have grandparents, or they live far away, and some of the residents don’t have grandchildren, so it’s really special to see all the smiles on everyone’s faces.”

Christine Hutchinson, general manager of Dene Holm said: “I’m so excited that we’ve been able to start developing this partnership with the school.

She added: “Intergenerational relationships are proven to be hugely beneficial for the children and the residents and already we have seen the joy it can bring, we’re all very excited to watch it grow.”
